What do I need before I can learn to drive?
You will need to obtain a provisional licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). More information can be obtained from the DVLA website (http://www.dvla.gov.uk/). The cost of a provisional licence is £45.00. (When you pass your driving test, you will need to convert your provisional licence to a full driving licence - this is normally free of charge.)
At what age can I start to learn to drive?
Normally the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is on your 17th birthday. However, you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday, but will have to wait until your 17th birthday before it becomes valid.
If you are in receipt of the higher rate mobility component of the disability living allowance, then you may hold a driving licence from 16 years of age (you may also apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday).
