Remembering Thinking, Braking & Overall Stopping Distances
A common question I get asked is how to remember thinking, braking and overall stopping distances. Below is a method to calculate these distances.
Overall Stopping Distance
The overall stopping distance is made up of the thinking distance (distance travelled during the reaction time) plus the braking distance (distance travelled from the moment the brakes are applied to when the vehicle comes to halt).
At 20mph, overall stopping distance is 2 times the speed, i.e. 20*2 = 40ft.
At 30mph, overall stopping distance is 2.5 times the speed, i.e. 30*2.5 = 75ft.
At 40mph, overall stopping distance is 3 times the speed, i.e. 40*3 = 120ft.
At 50mph, overall stopping distance is 3.5 times the speed, i.e. 50*3.5 = 175ft.
At 60mph, overall stopping distance is 4 times the speed, i.e. 60*4 = 240ft.
At 70mph, overall stopping distance is 4.5 times the speed, i.e. 70*4.5 = 315ft.
Thinking Distance
The thinking distance (in feet) is the same as the mph.
e.g. Thinking distance at 60mph is 60ft.
Braking Distance
To calculate the braking distance, simply subtract the thinking distance (feet) from the overall stopping distance (feet).
e.g. braking distance at 60mph = 240 - 60 = 180 feet.
Feet to metres
Note that 1 foot = 0.3048 metres, i.e. 1 foot is roughly equal to 3/10 metres. So to convert feet to metres, divide by 10 and multiply by 3.
e.g. 120ft = (120/10)*3 metres = 12 *3 = 36 metres.
